The Second Shot

June 20, 2011

For all those who were wondering about the second shot heard in A PLAGUE OF SECRETS- you aren’t the only person confused by the two shots!

What follows is my take on it- and this includes spoilers for this book, if you haven’t read it yet!

Here’s my take: Craig Chiurco arrives early at the alley. He’s already called Maya and convinced her to come down — pulling off Vogler’s Brooklyn accent, which fools her entirely — so he knows he’s going to frame her because he knows Vogler is carrying her gun (the Glock .40). Craig’s got his own Glock .40, which he uses to kill Vogler. But he knows Maya’s gun is on Vogler, so he takes that away from the body and fires a shot from that weapon (Maya’s) into the air, so that even without a solid ballistics match, that gun, just recently fired, still appears to be the murder weapon. Then he throws Maya’s just-fired gun behind the dumpster, where the cops will find it, and picks up one of the spent brass bullet casings (whichever one is easiest to find — it doesn’t matter), leaving one at the scene. And voila — it looks to the police, and the rest of the world, that Maya shot him with her gun, then in a panic threw the gun away and left the scene.

I hope that this helps.
